40 Years Ago It was the O’Show Taking the Opening Round of the AMA Supercross Series
With Anaheim I opening the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross this weekend, we thought it would be appropriate to look back at an earlier Supercross season opener. So in this week’s Throwback Thursday, we travel back to the opening round of the 1984 Wrangler Supercross Series where factory Honda ace Johnny O’Mara came out on fire and scored a decisive victory over Jeff Ward and Rick Johnson in front of 70,305 spectators who packed Anaheim Stadium. Here O’Mara celebrates on the podium. O’Mara passed early race leader Scott Burnworth on the fifth lap and then opened a gap on the rest of the field. On the podium after the race O’Mara admitted that he was holding on for dear life in the last few laps after he started experiencing stomach cramps.
