Throwback Thursday: Dale Singleton and Mike Baldwin as Young Lions
In this week’s Throwback we wind back the clock 43 years to 1977 and the AMA Road Race National at Pocono International Raceway. The photo shows Dale Singleton leading Mike Baldwin as the two battle through the Superspeedway’s infield section. Both were riding the often-overwhelming Yamaha TZ750, the massively powerful two-stroke beast that took a delicate throttle hand to control. At the time this photo was taken Singleton and Baldwin were still honing their chops. Both would go one to enjoy famed racing careers. Singleton was the racer who twice slayed the factory racing team Goliaths by winning the prestigious Daytona 200 in 1979 and 1981 on privateer Yamahas. He also won the AMA Road Racing Championship in 1981. Baldwin was a record-setting five-time AMA Road Racing Champion and the all-time wins leader in AMA Formula 1/Formula 750 history. In addition, Baldwin enjoyed a notable Grand Prix career. Today both riders are enshrined in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
