Throwback Thursday: Jeff Stanton’s Big Check
In this week’s Throwback we go back 27 years to 1992 and the AMA Awards Banquet. Honda’s Jeff Stanton scored the AMA Supercross Championship that season and at the banquet got a big $100,000 check from series sponsor RJ Reynolds. On the left is Stanton’s mechanic Danny Betley, who had won 250MX Tuner of the Year. It marked the third AMA Supercross title for Stanton in four years. It would prove to be Stanton’s last year atop the stadium series. The next season a young rider named Jeremy McGrath began his run that would make him the all-time King of Supercross. But for Stanton that ’92 championship made for a very nice payday. No word on what the bank said when he brought in the giant check.
