BIRMINGHAM, AL (June 12, 2015) – Cameron Beaubier just nipped his Monster Energy Graves Motorsports Yamaha teammate Josh Hayes in Friday’s MotoAmerica Superbike event at Barber Motorsports Park. Beaubier pushed his factory Yamaha R1 Superbike to a time of 1:25.908 over the 2.38-mile, 16-turn circuit. Hayes clocked a 1:25.977 so the gap between the two riders was less than 7-100ths of a second.
Next up were the factory Yoshimura Suzuki’s of Roger Hayden (1:26.689) and Jake Lewis (1:26.927). Jake Gagne was the top Superstock 1000 rider, turning a 1:27.033 on the RoadRace Factory Yamaha, putting him fifth fastest overall in the combined Superbike/Superstock 1000 times. Also impressive was South African newcomer Sheridan Morais on the Aprilia HSBK entry. He was sixth fastest with a 1:27.302.
Beaubier feels good about his pace and feel so far at Barber, especially considering the tough weekend he had at the track last year.
“Last year I had a big struggle of a weekend,” Beaubier explained. “I had two crashes and it was just a frustrating weekend. So to come and be able to have all day Friday to practice and get up to speed was really good for me. I had a good rhythm going and was having so much fun riding. The bike got better each time we changed things. Towards the end I did a decent string of low 26s and the 25.9, so it felt good.”
Last year the pole time at Barber was 1:25.324 set by Hayes.
Bobby Fong topped first-day qualifying for the Supersport machines on his Latus Motors Racing Triumph. Joe Roberts continued his domination of the Bazzaz Superstock 600 class in Friday qualifying and 2014 AMA Road Race Horizon Award Winner Anthony Mazziotto III topped a packed KTM RC Cup field in Q1.
