OAKLAND, CA, JAN. 25 – For the third time this year Jason Anderson took the win in dramatic fashion. On the last lap. Only this time it wasn’t Cole Seely that was left brokenhearted at the end of the race – it was Dean Wilson. Wilson had to forfeit his lead after he had bike issues near the end of the last lap, but was able to still finish second with his Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammate Justin Hill trailing in third.
The whole night seemed as though it was going Wilson’s way. He topped qualifying earlier in the day, won his heat race, and then grabbed the holeshot in the main wevent. But Wilson’s lead would not last long as teammate Hill was right there and took the lead. Then Anderson would follow suit, knocking Wilson down to third.
Anderson chased Hill and tried to take the lead and the battle between the pair would work in Wilson’s favor, providing the opportunity for him to take the lead in one fell swoop with nine laps to go. Wilson then settled into a good rhythm and started to open up a healthy gap on Anderson, who moved up to second place over Hill.
So, once again, it started to look like it was going to be Wilson’s night and the win looked like it was in the bag. But then to the shock of the crowd – and certainly to Wilson – he slowed down and had to roll over the final set of jumps. Wilson later explained that it was some sort of mechanical that caused his bike to die – a misfortune that Anderson was in place to capitalize on and take the win.
Fortunately Wilson got the bike going again and was able to take second ahead of Hill, but it was a very gutted Wilson on the podium after the race.
On the flipside of the coin, it was a very happy Anderson who grabbed his third win of the year and regained the points lead over rival Cole Seely who finished fourth. Hill completed the podium in third.
Geico Honda’s Zach Osborne followed Seely in fifth. Also on Hondas, Michael Leib, Jessy Nelson and Shane McElrath finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Cooper Webb rebounded to finish ninth, after he made contact with Malcolm Stewart causing them both to go down. Australian Dean Ferris rounded out the top 10.
