Smith Tops Indy Mile Qualifying

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, AUG 18 – Bryan Smith turned the fastest lap in timed qualifying Saturday afternoon for tonight’s Indy Mile. Smith rode the Crosley Radio/Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki to a lap of 37.767 seconds. He headed Jake Johnson (37.924), Brad Baker (38.098), Dan Ingram (38.174) and Sammy Halbert (38.185).

The top 17 riders were within a second of one another.

“The track was prepped really well tonight,” Smith said. “It’s got a lot of moisture in it, so there should be multiple racing lines during the races tonight.”

The surprise on the qualifying list was hometown hero Danny Ingram, who is returning to racing after nearly 20 years away. Ingram will be the sentimental favorite in what promises to be an interesting night of racing on the historic Mile.

The evening program is just getting underway.
