Brant Wins United States National Speedway Championship

| October 13, 2003

Scott “The Dominator” Brant made his sixth appearance at the United States National Speedway Championships at Costa Mesa Speedway in Costa Mesa, California, one to remember when he stormed to the Championship Main Event win and finally grabbed the title on October 11.

The 34-year-old Brant of Riverside, California, never put a wheel wrong on the Costa Mesa track all night, winning all four of his qualifying rides aboard his Kelly Dunagan Racing/Brant Engineering GM to score a maximum of 16 points to take a direct transfer and sit on the pole for the five-rider main event. He was joined by AMS Metal Supply’s Josh Larsen, Dunagan Racing teammate and two-time former U.S. National Speedway Champion Chris Manchester, Fiesler Racing/JRM Construction’s Gary Hicks and veteran speedway racer John Cook. Brant shot from the outside pole to take the lead off the start of the main event, and he was never seriously challenged. Larsen, Hicks, Manchester and Cook followed him home in one of the tightest main events in recent U.S. Nationals history.

“You know, this is the first National Championship that I have ever won,” Brant said after the race. “When I was a junior in 1983, all I needed to do in my last ride was get a third or better and nobody would be able to touch me. I was leading that race when the motor blew up on the white flag lap. Tonight, when I saw the white flag, I remembered that, and it was like, ‘C’mon baby!’ This hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s still an important title, and anytime I race anywhere, I race to win.”
