Carmichael, Hughes Hang Tough

| May 18, 2003

Kevin Windham did the same thing in moto one this week as he did last week, getting the holeshot and checking out on the field – only this time he didn’t fall and stretched his lead for most of the moto. Ricky Carmichael got into second, but even after he did he kept losing ground to Windham. Carmichael had to settle for second, some seven and a half seconds behind the cruising Windham.

The second moto saw Windham out front again, but Chad Reed made a move on him early. After Windham retaliated on the second lap in the woods, he hit a slick spot in the mud and fell. After he got up, he fell again and ended up sixth after all was said and done. Carmichael worked his way into the lead and won the second moto, extending his overall-win streak and perhaps starting a fresh moto-win streak. Reed finished second in the moto, with Timmy Ferry third – and that’s how they finished overall. Windham wound up fourth overall.

In the 125cc class, Ryan Hughes won his first National since 1995 in dominating fashion, topping both motos – although he was never far enough out front to relax in either moto. He won the first moto over Mike Brown by a mere second and a half, and in moto two, Eric Sorby finished just a quarter of a second behind Hughes. Now, Hughes sits just one point behind Brown for the points lead. Grant Langston seemed to have trouble finding his stride but still managed an 8-4 for fifth overall and is within striking distance in the points chase.
