Carmichael’s Perfect Series

| September 2, 2002

Ricky Carmichael completed his perfect season yesterday with yet another 1-1 win at Steel City Raceweay in Delmont, Pennsylvania. En route to the 2002 AMA Motocross Championship, the Team Honda rider has crushed the competition by winning 24 out of 24 motos aboard his CR250R. Carmichael came into the final round needing to win back-to-back motos to keep his streak alive, and he did it in typical Carmichael style – he dominated.

“I usually don’t get good starts here,” Carmichael said in a Honda press release. “But after I got the good start and won the first moto, I really didn’t feel the pressure in the second. I figured I should be able to get one more victory.”

The Floridian has had a history-making season in 2002, by winning two titles – AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross, with 11 main-event wins out of 16 in supercross and 12 out of 12 overalls in motocross – 23 wins out of 28 events in all!

Team Yamaha’s Timmy Ferry was second overall on his YZ426F thumper, with Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Journeys Honda’s Mike LaRocco taking third.

In the 125cc division, Chevy Trucks Kawasaki’s James Stewart took put an exclamation point on his championship rookie season with yet another win, and Team Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca raced to a second-overall finish with a score of 3-3 for the day.
