Carmichael Stays Perfect at Mt. Morris

| May 26, 2002

Ricky Carmichael continued his perfect 2002 Chevy Trucks National Championship Motocross Series by once again winning both motos at the Highpoint National Motocross in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, today. The Team Honda rider has yet to lose a moto in the 250cc class, and holds a commanding points lead in the series only three rounds in.

After finishing off the podium last week, Carmichael’s teammate Sebastien Tortelli was once again the runner-up, the Frenchman finishing second in both motos. Taking third place was Chevy Trucks Kawasaki’s Ezra Lusk, who placed third in both motos.

As for the 125cc class, Chevy Trucks Kawasaki’s James Stewart lost a National MX for the first time. After falling hard in the final practice session on Saturday and having his injured knee checked out by doctors at a nearby hospital on Sunday morning, Stewart, 16, toughed it out in the first 125 moto and, despite being slowed by the injury, he garnered a fourth-place finish. In the second moto, Stewart and Team Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Chevy Trucks’ Mike Brown, 28, collided in the early stages, causing damage to both bikes, and ultimately taking both riders out of the race.

The winner? Last week’s runner-up and the 125cc East Region SX champ, Chad Reed, who rode to both moto wins on his Boost Mobile/Yamaha/Troy Racing YZ250F. Going 5-2 for second overall was Blimpie Suzuki’s Branden Jesseman, and Frenchman Eric Sorby, of the Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Chevy Trucks squad, was third.

Stewart’s problems cost him the points lead, and he is now 10 points behind Reed, 125 to 115.

The series will take the next weekend off before resuming the following Sunday (June 9) in Southwick, Massachussetts.
