2022 MXGP Matterley Basin Round 1 Results

Cycle News Staff | February 28, 2022

The FIM MXGP season kicked off this weekend with the Grand Prix of Great Britain at Matterley Basin. The race was actually delayed a week due to high winds and inclement weather, but this week went off without a hitch.

Lots of news going into this year’s opener with big team changes (one of the former KTM Factory Teams is now GasGas Factory Racing) as well as last year’s champ Jeffery Herlings missing round one due to a foot injury. Romain Febvre also missed round one due to an injuries he sustained at the Paris Supercross.

Jorge Prado grabbed the early lead in race one while rival Tim Gajser dealt with mistakes and made his way through the field. Jeremy Seewer found himself up front as he passed Prado for the race lead. Gajer eventually caught and passed Prado for second as Prado later finished fourth. Seewer then made a mistake late in the race, handing the lead and the win to Gajser. Seewer crossed second with last year’s MX2 champion, Maxime Renaux, grabbing the final podium.

Prado and Seewer again started up front while Gajser made things hard on himself with a poor start. Gajser worked up to the lead position but threw it away after falling just after the finish line. Prado re-took the lead and held it until the checkers. Glenn Coldenhoff rounded out the podium in race two.

Simon Laengenfelder won his first MXGP with a perfect day, taking back to back moto victories in the MX2 division. Laengenfelder rides for the new Red Bull GasGas Team and fended off charges from both Tom Vialle and Jago Geerts. Vialle, Geerts, and De Wolf all exchanged podiums throughout the day.
