INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 7, 2015) – Monster Energy Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier was fastest in the first MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 qualifying session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Beaubier set the mark to beat of 1:38.456 fairly early in the session. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Roger Hayden clocked in at 1:38.942 to finish second. Beaubier and Hayden were the only riders to break into the one minute, 38-second bracket. Third was Hayden’s Superbike rookie teammate Jake Lewis (1:39.215).
The surprise of the session was series co-leader Josh Hayes only managing seventh fastest overall on his factory Yamaha. The Superbike series essentially is coming down to a race between the Yamaha teammates, even though with four races remaining both Hayden and Lewis are mathematically still in the hunt.
Jake Gagne topped the Superstock 1000 machines, with a time of 1:39.688 on his Roadrace Factory Yamaha R1.
Steve Rapp, who raced MotoGP at this track, is making a special appearance this weekend and qualified sixth overall (third in Superstock) on the Atom Racing BMW.
The Superbike qualifying Shootout continues this afternoon at 4:50 pm.
