Mechanicsville, Maryland (July 12, 2014) – Ryan Dungey claimed his second overall win of the season and inched his way back into the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Series championship title chase with a 2-1 performance this weekend at Budds Creek Raceway in Mechanicsville, Maryland. The Red Bull KTM rider was strong in both motos.
In the first moto, Dungey ran in third for much of the early part of the race, behind teammate Ken Roczen and Team Muscle Milk Honda’s Trey Canard. On lap eight of the 17-lapper, Dungey passed Canard and then started slowly to reel in Roczen. Near the end of the race, Dungey picked up the pace and started closing a bit faster on his teammate, looking as though he might actually overtake the former MX2 world champ for the moto win, however, the Minnesota rider ran out of time and had to settle for second behind Roczen, with Canard finishing third ahead of GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac and Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart, who was outside the top 10 at the start of the race.
In the second moto, Dungey grabbed the holeshot and led from flag to flag to claim his third moto win of the season.
Roczen moved into second on the opening lap of the race, and pushed Dungey a couple of times during the moto, but could never really get close enough to make a pass.
Tomac got a bad start in moto two, and came from outside the top 10 to finish third, passing Canard on lap 13 to move into the final podium position. Canard held on for fourth, with Soaring Eagle RCH Suzuki’s Weston Peick matched his best moto finish of the year with a fifth.
When the points were tallied, Dungey took the overall with a 2-1, beating out Roczen’s 1-2. Meanwhile, Tomac finished third overall, his 4-3 trumping Canard’s 3-4. Peick rounded out the top five with a 6-5.
