Bubba Rush Scored His One and Only National Win Before Home Crowd

In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we dial it back 50 years to the Bicentennial year of 1976 and the opening weekend of that year’s AMA Grand National Championship inside the Houston Astrodome. This photo shows riders lined up, ready to start the Short Track main. From left to right you see Mike Kidd (72), Ken Hapke (16P), Bubba Rush (24), Darryl Hurst (34), Billy Labrie (65), Bruce Hanlon (78Z) and Hank Scott (14) on the front row. On the second row you can just see Dave Hansen (23). Rush took the lead on his Bultaco in the closing laps after previous leader Kenny Roberts retired with bike problems. Rush was from Houston and the Astrodome fans loved seeing one of their local heroes taking the victory. It proved to be the only national Rush would win during his racing career.
