In this week’s Throwback Thursday, you can almost hear the roar of engines and the blare of a racing announcer calling the action over crackly fairgrounds loudspeakers. This photo takes us back to August 14, 1988, and captures the start of the Sturgis Pro-Am Regional Half-Mile, with Dan Stanley (74S) grabbing the holeshot and leading Jimmy Sanchez (91S) and the rest of the field into the first turn. Other riders in the shot include Ricky Smith (20S), Danny Cahoon (9C) and Paul Polhenus (80P) and Blake Ehrich (white helmet). Stanley’s quick launch was a sign of things to come. Though Sanchez took the early point on his Honda, Stanley powered his Wood-Rotax to the front at the halfway mark and never looked back, claiming the win over Sanchez and Smith. A classic moment of raw speed and intense competition 38 years ago from South Dakota’s Black Hills.
