In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to 1979 and that year’s 125cc Motocross Grand Prix World Championship. This photo shows a moment of high-flying action from the 1979 Irish 125cc Grand Prix in Clondalkin, Ireland, and captures Suzuki teammates Akira Watanabe (1) and Harry Everts (2) soaring side by side over a jump. This pivotal race saw Belgium’s Everts dominate, sweeping both motos to secure an insurmountable points lead. In doing so, he clinched his second career FIM Motocross World Championship title (his first in the 125cc class), dethroning his Japanese teammate Watanabe, the 1978 champion. The photo beautifully freezes a moment of intense, high-stakes competition between the two elite riders as the title race reached its dramatic conclusion.
