Hello Hangtown! Round two of the 2025 AMA Pro Motocross Championship takes to the gate today in northern California for the Hangtown Motocross Classic. Temps are set to reach triple digits as both the weather and the on-track action will be HOT. At the end of the day its Jett Lawrence and Haiden Deegan once again claimed the overall wins.

450 Moto 1
Aaron Plessinger shot out to the lead early in the first 450 moto. The lone Red Bull KTM rider sprinted in the opening laps and looked to have control over the field as both Jett Lawrence and Eli Tomac recovered from lackluster starts. Plessinger held the top spot all the way to the two lap card when he eventually ran into lappers and saw his lead dwindle to the hard-charging Tomac.

Throughout the moto, Tomac continuously pushed his way to the front. After passing for second place, the number-three put his head down and chipped away at the gap to Plessinger. With two laps left in the moto, Tomac made the pass for the lead and clinched the victory over Plessinger.

Jett Lawrence held on for third. The current points leader seemed to lose the tow to the leaders and backed off the pace late in the moto in hopes of conserving energy for the second moto. A third place result should still set him up nicely for the day’s overall podium.

450 Moto 2
Jett Lawrence bounced back in moto two with an excellent start that put him at the front of the field from the get go. He rounded lap one in the lead and held the top spot for all 15 laps of the shortened 25-minute race. 3-1 results put him on the top step of the podium with first overall.

Justin Cooper started up front with his Yamaha teammate Cooper Webb. This advantage put him in the lead pack as he trailed Lawrence for the entire second moto. 4-2 scores proved good enough for third overall for Cooper, marking his first podium of the year.

Aaron Plessinger looked good all day and rounded out the podium in third for the second 450 moto. AP started outside the top five but used the same speed from moto one to pass for third at the half way mark. By this point the leaders were too far gone and Plessinger held on for the final spot on the box. 2-3 finishes put him second on the day.

The story of the day came from Eli Tomac’s poor start in race two. The moto one winner was nearly dead last off the start and rounded lap one in 26th position. He fought hard but only managed to make his way to ninth at the end of the hot moto. Unfortunately this saw his overall hopes go out the window as 1-9 finishes dropped him off the podium to fourth.

250 Moto 1
Chance Hymas again started up front in the first 250 moto. The Honda HRC rider is showing he can hang with the early sprint speed as this is the second week in a row he’s led the beginning stages of the race. Unfortunately this is also the second week in a row where he’s made a mistake while leading and an off-track excursion saw him forgo the top spot to Casey Cochran.

Cochran took over the lead for a few laps over Hymas and Deegan while the rest of the pack pushed forward. At one point there was four riders all battling for the top spot. After starting sixth, the points made quick work of the front runners and moved to the lead on lap seven with a bold move around the outside of Cochran. He ran away in the second half of the race and crossed the line seven seconds clear of second place.

Jo Shimoda once again finished second, but not in the same fashion as last week. The second Honda rider started back in ninth before starting his bid towards the front. Shimoda chipped away at the leaders and eventually found himself in podium territory, taking second for the third consecutive moto.

Levi Kitchen grabbed a podium in third. The Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider held off his teammate Ty Masterpool in the final laps to take the final spot on the box. This marks Kitchen’s first podium of the 2025 season.

250 Moto 2
Lance Kobush shot out to a rocket start in the second 250 moto. The privateer Honda rider took over the lead from Casey Cochran and led the opening two laps before Deegan once again made his move to the lead.

Deegan’s pass spelled trouble for the rest of the field as the shortened moto meant less time to make up ground on the points leader. No one could touch the Star Racing Yamaha rider as Deegan took off with the lead and grabbed yet another moto win. 1-1 on the day earned him the overall win and makes it four moto wins in a row. He’ll control the points lead heading into round three.

Jo Shimoda finished second and again used 2-2 results to take second overall. Shimoda started back in fifth but only got better as the race wore on and the conditions deteriorated. He finished almost 10 seconds behind Deegan but the ultra-consistent results have seen him finish second in all four motos this year.

Levi Kitchen found himself on the box again in moto two. The Kawasaki rider started outside the top five but made quick work of the leaders en route to a podium position. He and Shimoda traded positions but Kitchen still matched his season best finish with another third. A 3-3 day saw him take his first overall podium of the year in third overall.

QUALIFYING
450MX
Jett Lawrence is back for round two with another top qualifying result. Remember this is the same track where he crashed out of the series just one year ago. That didn’t seem to matter as his best time was a half-second better than second place, Justin Cooper. Cooper’s teammate, Eli Tomac, was a close third. Note that all of the top times came from the first session as the track continued to break down for Q2.

Haiden Deegan set the pace in the 250 class. The round-one winner looked to make a statement after losing the P1 qualifying spot last weekend in the final laps. His time in the first qualifying session held up as the best of the day, putting him about half a second up on the rest of the field. Chance Hymas and Ty Masterpool showed speed on their fast laps and rounded out the qualifying podium.
