The motorsports world lost one of its most prolific photographers with the death of Andrew Wheeler.
Wheeler was found after having passed away sometime in the days before January 5 in his home of Austin, Texas. He was 60 years old. The cause of death is still unclear as Cycle News at the time of this publication, but he was recovering from a stroke suffered at the 2022 Japanese MotoGP, the last race he worked as a photographer.
British-born Wheeler was a mainstay of road-racing paddocks in America and in Europe, and he took some of the most iconic photos of the last 20 years, many of which have been featured in Cycle News.
“Andrew may be gone, but he will not be forgotten,” wrote renowned MotoGP journalist David Emmett. “Because of his immense talent as a photographer. Because of his warmth and friendliness. Because of his passion, for racing, for food, for travel. Because of his love for his [departed] wife Emily. And yes, because of the quirks and idiosyncrasies that made him the unique and memorable person he was.
“We do not truly die when our hearts stop beating and our bodies fail us. We live on in the memories of those who knew us and loved us. Andrew Wheeler will live on for a long time.” CN
