2018 Foxborough 450cc Supercross Results: Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac came into Foxborough on a streak, having won the two previous rounds of the 2018 Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Championship. He was fastest during daytime qualifying, and came up just short of winning his heat race, thanks to a smart move by Monster Energy Yamaha’s Justin Barcia to hold him on the outside in the race’s final turn.
And in the main event, Tomac started near the front. The only problem was that Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin started in front of him.

It was actually Honda’s Christian Craig who grabbed the holeshot, but he jumped off the side of the track during lap one and crashed (he eventually finished 11th), handing the lead to Musquin, while Tomac had to fight off points leader Jason Anderson in the opening couple laps. Husqvarna privateer Chad Reed went down in the first turn.
By the time Tomac got clear of the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider, Musquin was pretty comfortable up front, and Tomac spent the bulk of the remaining 22 laps like he was attached to Musquin with a bungee cord – getting close, then falling behind, then getting close again – as the track continued to deteriorate.

Just as the white flag was coming out, Tomac made his move, sneaking by Musquin as the pair started the final lap. Then, just about a half-lap later, Musquin saw his opportunity, and he took it, slamming into Tomac and knocking the Kawasaki rider down.
It was a very rough pass, and Tomac took understandable exception to it, while Musquin justified it by saying he didn’t know Tomac was going to take the inside rut in the turn. That part is possible, since Musquin had never seen Tomac’s lines up to that point in the race.

Still, in the end, Musquin took his third main-event win of the year, and they had such a lead that Tomac was still able to get up – with his throttle grip coming off in his hand – and finish second, about 25 seconds behind Musquin.
Anderson hung on for third in front of Blake Baggett and Dean Wilson. Reed recovered for 10th.
