Throwback Thursday: Hang On Mike!
Larry Lawrence | February 8, 2018
We go back 44 years in this week’s Throwback Thursday. Mike Gerald was the Cajun King of Short Track with his three national wins all coming on Short Tracks. He’d also won the national at Santa Fe Speedway two years running when the championship rolled into Chicagoland in August of 1974. So Gerald was the favorite that night and in this wonderful Gary Van Voorhis photo we see Gerald (15) charging hard into the first turn, getting completely sideways alongside Mike Kidd (74). Gerald led a few laps of the national, but the factory Yamaha of Kenny Roberts (1) moved into the lead and Roberts took the national win. Gerald’s string of national victories at Santa Fe Speedway was broken, but he still managed a runner-up finish. John Hateley was third.
