BIRMINGHAM, AL (June 21, 2014) — Hayden Gillim won in dominating fashion in Saturday’s Supersport final. Gillim raced his TOBC-backed Suzuki GSX-R600 to a 5.987 second victory over Dustin Dominguez. Dominguez had to battle late to earn back the spot from an up and coming Kalbe De Keyrel, who briefly had second late in the race before Dominguez charged back.
“All year I’ve been getting good starts and I got another one today,” “After the first couple of laps I saw the times going up and I thought the guys would be right on my tail. I had a moment late in the race at Charlotte’s Web so I backed it off a little bit when I realized I had a pretty good gap.”
Gillim shot out to an early lead, his extensive experience on this track showing. As the race settled in it was Dominguez in second followed by Alexander. Alexander started getting pressure from Kaleb De Keyrel and it was De Keyrel taking over third about halfway through.
The series leader ended up in the gravel trap, having lost the front end going into a turn. He got back on his machine and struggled initially to power it out of the gravel, but he got back on track hoping to minimize the damage in the points.
Gillim continued to pull away in the closing laps with Dominguez and De Keyrel tied together to battle over second. De Keyrel got past Dominguez, but Dominguez never gave up. On the final lap the more experienced Dominguez charged back to take back the runner-up spot. Alexander finished 13th after recovering from his crash.
Alexander still leads the series, but with the victory Gillim has closed to within seven points.
