CLIO, Mich. (May 20,2014) -2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion Jared Mees and his wife Nichole Mees, also a top professional flat track motorcycle racer, will be racing against each other as husband and wife at the Springfield Mile at the Iliinois State Fairgrounds on May 25. The race marks the newlywed’s return to Springfield for the first time since their September 2013 trackside wedding at the venue.
The Springfield Mile is a special place for the couple, who compete against each other in the Expert class at all AMA Pro Racing Flat Track events. At the September 2012 Springfield Mile, Jared surprised Nichole by proposing as she was being interviewed on stage prior to the race. The couple then married at the track in September 2013, on the front straightaway prior to the race in front of a huge crowd.
“The Springfield Mile is an important race to win, as it shows the other racers who’s boss as we head into the heart of the season” said Jared, who won the Springfield Mile in 2011. “And Springfield is so rich in history, both for the sport, with racing there dating back to 1937, and for Nichole and me.”
“I was so surprised when Jared proposed to me on the Springfield stage. Getting married there, a year later in front of all the fans, was so perfect,” said Nichole, who has qualified for twenty-four Grand National Main events so far in her career. “Standing on the Springfield Mile podium next to Jared would be a dream come true. I’ve been training harder than ever. I hope it happens.” Nichole has qualified for the Springfield Mile Main an impressive five times in her career so far, with a best-ever finish of 10th in 2011.
To celebrate the occasion, and give back to fans, Jared will have snacks and drinks for fans in his pit area on race d.ay, sponsored by National Cycle Windscreens. Fans will also be able to sit on Jared’s HarleyDavidson XR750 race bike for a photo opportunity. Jared and Nichole Mees, professional flat track motorcycle racers who started dating when Nichole was 16 years old and Jared was 17, are among an elite group of married couples in professional sports who compete against each other in the top level of their sport. Jared was the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Champion. Nichole has qualified for 24 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Main events and scored a career best 7th place finish in 2011 at Knoxville, Iowa.
