Jorge Lorenzo Out, More Surgery Scheduled

Defending World Champion Jorge Lorenzo has been ruled out of Sunday’s German Grand Prix after re-injuring his surgically repaired collarbone in a high-speed crash in this afternoon’s free practice session at the Sachsenring in Germany. Lorenzo will fly home to Barcelona, Spain today and will undergo surgery to repair the damage to the plated collarbone.
Lorenzo was the fastest rider in this morning’s first practice session, the Yamaha rider continuing to amaze after breaking his collarbone two weeks ago in the lead-up to the Dutch Grand Prix – where he managed to finish fifth just a day after undergoing surgery to repair the break.
But things went badly in the afternoon when Lorenzo crashed on the injured shoulder some 10 minutes into the session. The Spaniard was taken to the medical center for X-rays where it was revealed that he had damaged the plate that was inserted just two weeks ago.
“I have decided to go home and recover after today’s crash at Sachsenring,” Lorenzo said in a team release. “I prefer to focus on surgery to fix the plate that was unfortunately bent during the crash. I will try to recover and be back as soon as possible.”
Whether or not Lorenzo will attempt to ride at Laguna Seca in a week’s time isn’t known.
“The diagnosis after the fall is that the osteosynthesis material is bent in the middle,” said Dr. Enric Caceres. “The screws of the proximal and distal have endured, but Jorge will need a new intervention to re-attach the clavicle, because the plate has been curved slightly.”
