Pat Smage took a pair of wins at rounds one and two of the AirES AMA/NATC MotoTrials US National Championship held in the mountainous logging country near Cayuta, New York.

Looking to add a sixth national title to his resume, Smage took the early lead on both days of competition, beating out Sherco USA teammate Bryan Roper on Saturday and teammate Karl Davis Jr. on Sunday to take his wins.

Missing from the rounds was 2010 champ Cody Webb, who will miss most of the series due to a broken foot.

“It feels good to get out of here with a pair of wins, but I had to keep an eye on the competition this weekend, there are a lot of young riders who are getting better each year and at some point they are going to be pushing me really hard for these wins,” said Smage.

The series now heads to Vermont for next weekend’s double-header, where Smage will carry a 14-point lead in the series standings over Roper, 60 points to 46, with eight rounds remaining on the schedule.
