Interview: Ricky Carmichael’s Loretta’s Return

Kit Palmer | August 15, 2012

It’s been five years since we last saw Ricky Carmichael suit up and race – at least on a motorcycle. The motocrossers-turned-car racer returned to his motocross roots when he revisited this year’s 31st running of the 2012 Red Bull AMA Amateur Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Tennessee. This time, however, thing were quite different. He came not as aspiring young motocrosser as most racers do here but as a married father of two five-year-old twins simply wanting to do what all “Vet” motocrossers want to do when they come to Loretta’s – to have fun and race (and hopefully win). But just because he’s a multi-time champion, didn’t mean he got a free pass. The 33-year-old Carmichael first had to transfer through an area qualifier, pay his own entry, and race, just like everyone els. He signed up for the Junior 25+ class and won all three of his motos.
