Editorial: The $31 million California Rip-Off
Jean Turner | June 7, 2012
Imagine you have a stack of fresh new knobby tires in your garage and you’re primed and ready for a great season of riding. But your neighbor across the street – who always gave you a condescending sneer when you were loading bikes in your driveway – came over in broad daylight, snapped your garage door lock with a pair of bolt cutters and walked away with all but one of your brand new Dunlop MX51s. Also imagine that they don’t even plan to use the tires for their intended purpose, but plan to throw them into a wood-chipper to make some rubber mulch for their sprawling backyard playground, which, they’ve told you, you and your kids are not welcome to play on.
How would that go over with you? Imagine the anger you’d feel and the action you’d be sure to take (be it through calling law enforcement or through second-degree assault). Are you imagining it? Good. Now be advised that even worse just happened in California – to the tune of $31 million of your money.
