Supercross: The Villopoto Era!
Cycle News Staff | April 12, 2012
Don’t look now, but we’re squarely in the Ryan Villopoto era of Supercross racing in America. Since his comeback from a shattered right leg suffered at the St. Louis Supercross in April of 2010, Villopoto has gone on a tear and won everything, including the 2011 and 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross titles, the 2011 Monster Energy Cup and its million dollar prize, the 2011 Lucas Oil Motocross Championship and was part of Team USA’s winning 2011 Motocross des Nations squad – winning the deciding moto in the international teams competition. This kind of domination doesn’t’ come along often and you might say they are already carving out a spot for Villopoto on the Mt. Rushmore of Motocross.
His performance so far this season in the Supercross series is simply astounding. Yes, he’s the last man standing among the 2012 contenders, nevertheless his winning margin and wrapping up the title with four rounds remaining is historic and places his 2012 indoor performance among the greatest all time in the 39-year history of the series.
