Although the event began under controversy with riders threatening to boycott because of prize money and a format that didn’t agree with, the first-ever Supercross at Anaheim Stadium went off in front of 30,569 spectators on December 4, 1976 with Team Honda’s Marty Smith capturing the win.

After four heats, two semis and a consolation race, 24 riders (out of the 80 who attempted to qualify) lined up for the start of the 20-lap race and it was Smith leading from start to finish over Pierre Karsmakers and Kent Howerton.
