Editorial: What Of CRT?

Paul Carruthers | January 21, 2012

For starters, the name has to go. CRT? For now it stands for Claiming Rule Teams, though it might switch to Colin Rules Today since Mr. Edwards is inarguably the biggest name in the new, second-tier MotoGP division – or class within a class – that will make its debut in this year’s MotoGP World Championship.

Just don’t call it Moto1, which is really what it is. At least for now.

I don’t have a problem necessarily with what Dorna is trying to do. They needed to swell the grids and in this economy Honda, Yamaha and Ducati (not to mention Suzuki and Kawasaki, who have packed up and left altogether) aren’t suddenly going to do that on their own. It might be awhile before we see more teams leasing prototype MotoGP bikes, so CRT is Dorna’s way of adding some girth to the grid. A cheaper option.

But at this point, I’m not a fan. In fact, it could turn out to be rather embarrassing. At least in year one…
