The AMA Grand National Championship will be decided in the final race of the year at Yavapai Downs in Prescott, Arizona after heavy rains overnight forced the cancellation of the postponed Knoxville Raceway half mile in Knoxville, Iowa.
The decision was made shortly after 10:00 a.m. local time when it was apparent the track could not be made race ready in time for the event. That leaves only the second Yavapai Downs Mile as the deciding event.
Zanotti Racing’s Jake Johnson has the lead in both the Grand National Championship and the Grand National Twins standings, but there are four riders with a mathematical chance of winning the Grand National title. Latus Harley-Davidson/ENI USA R&M/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports’ Joe Kopp, who won the first Yavapai Downs mile of the season, is ten points behind Johnson. Rogers Lake Racing/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Lucas Oil’s Jared Mess is 19 points back. And Monster Energy Kawasaki/Jones Bros Racing/KK Motorcycle Supply’s Henry Wiles is 26 points back going into a race that has 28 points up for grabs.
Five riders still have a shot at Johnson for the Grand National Twins Title. Harley-Davidson Motor’s Kenny Coolbeth is 14 points back. Kings Kustoms/KK Motorcycle Supply’s Sammy Halbert has 20 points to make up. Mees is 21 behind and the longest shots are Kopp and Lancaster Harley-Davidson/Dallas-Fort Worth Honda’s Chris Carr, both of whom trail by 27 points.
Van`s Yamaha/Woody Kyle Racing’s Jeffery Carver already won the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Grand National Championship.
