Alessi Eyes Another Comeback
Mike Alessi is used to starting over and he is also used to coming back from injury. He has had to do it four times during the last two years alone. Just five weeks ago he injured his knee while preparing for the High Point round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross championships, and now he is trying to recover from a crash two weeks ago at Lakewood, Colorado, which re-injured that same knee.
We recently chatted with Alessi following his second operation on his knee.
“It just makes me want to work harder,” Alessi said about the prospect of having to go through another period of rehab. “I knew I needed to give it some time to recover but I was trying to win the championship and I knew in order to do that I needed to stay alive in the points and I needed to race Colorado to do that. Unfortunately, I crashed with another rider and I got hurt. That’s the risk I had to take to try to win the championship and I’m sure anyone else would have tried to race that race to stay in the hunt.”
This time around Alessi will be able take it nice and slow during the healing process.
“Things are getting better every day and we should be back in the gym in a week or two. It’s just going to take some time,” added Alessi. “We’re just going to take it day by day and we’re taking the long road to let the thing heal up naturally. For sure, I’m going to take things slow when I get back to riding or even on the bicycle. I don’t want to do anything that might re-injure my knee. Everything is going to be a slow process because I don’t want to do this all again a third time. When I start feeling good, then we will start pushing harder.”
