Smith Takes Castle Rock ST

Moroney’s HD/Screamin’ Eagle’s Bryan Smith won his first AMA Grand National Flat Track of the season last night, the Michigan man racing his Honda to victory in the Castle Rock Short Track.

Smith topped Saddleman/American Honda’s Jared Mees by 2.5 seconds with Bettencourt’s Honda’s Kenny Coolbeth a further two seconds behind in third place.

Washington’s Sammy Halbert, the winner of the Castle Rock TT on Friday night, continued his strong weekend in his home event by finishing fourth on Saturday night.

Halbert’s fellow Washingtonian Joe Kopp ended up fifth on his Honda, barely ahead of Sammy Halbert’s brother, Jethro. Stockton, California’s Joseph Hernandez was seventh, followed by Kevin Varnes, Scooter Vernon and Logan Myers.

Multi-time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr finished 12th.

After five rounds of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Singles Championship, Jake Johnson – 14th in the TT last night – and Coolbeth are tied with 79 points, 10 more than Mees.
