Carmichael and Stewart Win Again

| August 22, 2004

It was the same old story in Binghamton, New York today as James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael both took the wins in their respective classes. Making today even more special for Stewart was the fact that he clinched the 125 National title. It was the second National title of his career and with the overall win he tied Ricky Carmichael for most 125 wins. As for the 250 class, Carmichael continued his dominance by taking both moto wins to keep his perfect season intact.

In the first 250 moto Carmichael grabbed the holeshot with Kevin Windham and Chad Reed in tow. For a few laps Windham kept Carmichael honest for a few laps until Carmichael turned in a lap time that was a whopping five seconds faster than anyone all day pulled away from Windham. In third was Reed, but by the end of the moto Reed caught up to Windham and passed him. When the checkered flag flew it was Carmichael in first, Reed in second and Windham in third.

The second moto was much of the same, as Carmichael again got the holeshot and checked out, leaving everyone else to fight for second. On the first lap, though, Windham went down hard on a huge downhill triple jump, effectively ending his chances for third overall. Inheriting third in the moto was Ernesto Fonseca who, by the end of the moto, had his hands full with a hard charging Sebastian Tortelli. The two riders battled for many laps before on, the last lap, they came together and went down. Both riders remounted and returned to the race without loosing any positions. At the finish it was Carmichael taking the win followed by Reed, Fonseca and Tortelli respectively. In the overall Carmichael got the victory followed by Reed and Tortelli.

In the 125-class Stewart had no problem taking both moto wins by huge margins. In the first moto Stewart got a decent start and moved into the lead on the third lap. After that he began to pull away. In second was Broc Hepler and third was Mike Brown. Brown led early in the moto, but was passed by Hepler in the latter stages of the race. At the finish it was Stewart, Hepler and Brown respectively.

In the second 125 moto Stewart got a much better start and moved into the lead on the first lap and was never heard from again all race. In second was Davi Millsaps (he got fourth in moto one) who rode around by himself all race. Troy Adams held down the third spot before he went down and gave it up to Hepler. At the finish it was Stewart, Millsaps and Hepler respectively. In the overall Stewart took the win followed by Hepler and Millsaps.
