Hamill Wins AMA National Series

Former Individual World Speedway Champion Billy “The Bullet” Hamill [1996] won the inaugural AMA National Speedway Championship Series with 55 points after winning the final round of the AMA National Championship Speedway Series at Fast Fridays in Auburn, California, on September 21.
Hamill’s Coventry [British League] teammate “Bronco” Billy Janniro, who finished third in the night’s final race, was second overall, with 51 total series points. Three-time AMA National Speedway Champion “Flyin” Mike Faria was third verall, with 42 points.
Greg Hancock, who won the second round of the series, missed the event with a bronchial infection that grounded him in Sweden, finished tied for fourth with “Fast” Eddie Castro.
For Hamill it was his second consecutive National Title and third in the past four years. Hamill won the first- and third-round A finals.
Northern California 2002 seasonal Points Champion Bobby “The Blaze” Hedden, who qualified for the Championship program from the Preliminary heats, scored his way to the ‘A’ final where he finished second behind Hamill. Hedden’s spectacular night propelled him from 14th to eighth in the series standings.
