| February 19, 2002

Mike Kiedrowski won the opening round of the World Off-Road Championship Series at the Speedworld MX facility in Phoenix, Arizona, February 16. After getting off to a sixth-place start, Kiedrowski, on the Yoshimura DR-Z400 Suzuki four-stroke, passed leader Robert Naughton and then held off a late-race charge by National Hare & Hound Champion Destry Abbott to begin his defense of the WORCS number-one plate on the right foot.

Kawasaki-mounted Abbott ended up finishing second, approximately 25 seconds behind Kiedrowski after the two-hour race. Finishing third was Yamaha-mounted Ty Davis, who, at one point, led the race before suffering carburetion problems. Naughton ended up fourth, followed by Nick Pearson, Kurt Caselli, David Pearson and Brian Garrahan
