Davis Dazzles at Route 66 Half Mile

| July 2, 2000
Moroney’s H-D/fasthog.com/Gould Erectors-backed Will Davis held off Jay Springsteen to capture his first Grand National win of the 2000 Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Championships at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois, on July 1.

Springsteen pushed his Bartel’s H-D/Corbin/McCoy’s Leathers Harley to Davis’ rear wheel, but lapped traffic ended his challenge.

“I thought it was Springsteen behind me and I thought he might fade, but that old man just got faster,” Davis said.

Bryan Bigelow was a lonely third on his USC Racing/Lancaster H-D mount. Corbin Racing/Burks Motorsports/Harley-Davidson of Missouri’s Joe Kopp finished a distant fourth, despite losing a plug wire mid-way through the race. Mike Hacker continued his solid year with a fifth-place finish on his Saddlemen Racing/Lancaster H-D/ Dodge Brothers’ Harley.

Rich King moved his Harley-Davidson Motor Co./Shoei-backed Harley to sixth after a slow start. Kopp’s Corbin Racing teammate, Kenny Coolbeth also worked his way forward and ended up seventh. Team Powell/West Bend H-D’s J.R. Schnabel bounced around in the middle of the field, climbing as high as sixth before dropping to eighth. Part time racer Paul Morgan III, had another good night as he pushed his Moroney’s H-D/Fasthog.com/Max Leathers-backed Harley into ninth. After sitting on the pole for the main, Harley-Davidson of Sacramento/Wrenchead.com/Phoenix Construction’s Chris Carr faded to a 10th-place finish.

Carr still holds a nine point lead over Will Davis, while Springsteen is another 10 back, with Kopp just one behind Springer.
