CALVMX/AHRMA SoCal Regional Series
Round 6: Perris Raceway

The Battle for the Cup Continues

PERRIS, CA

For round six, the 2010 CALVMX/AHRMA SoCal Regional Series made its return to a drastically changed Perris Raceway. Gone were the majority of the sweeping turns so highly favored by the Vintage and Post-Vintage racers. In their place were several technical S turns and hairpins, which put proper line selection at a premium. As always, the skilled track personnel at Perris did an excellent job of catering the jumps and the course in general to the classic machinery of Vintage racing.

The positive reputation Perris has in accommodating Vintage racing was apparent, as there were more than 100 entries on the day. Included in the mix were three British Greeves machines, a pristine BSA, and a seldom-seen Triumph twin.2010 0613 Perris Raceway Norm Himaka 311

The latest battle for the Manufacturers Cup featured a spirited two-moto joust between current points leader Norm Himaka (311, above) of Team Maico and Wendell Clark (431, below), representing Team Yamaha. At the start of moto one, it was Bultaco jockey Kevin Lewis taking the lead, followed by Clark and Himaka. Lewis held the lead through lap two, with Himaka moving into second, followed by Clark.2010 0613 Perris Raceway Wendell Clark 431

With three laps remaining in the moto, Himaka powered his way into the lead, with Clark trailing right behind him. At the checkers, it was Himaka with the win, followed by Clark. Honda rider Randi Perkins slipped into the third spot.

With the chance for the overall win and valuable team points on the table, Clark wasted no time in nailing the holeshot in moto two. Lewis and Perkins trailed close behind, while a missed shift put Himaka in fourth as the pack thundered onto the main course. Clark continued to lead as the pack neared the end of lap two. A few turns before the finish line, Himaka timed his move perfectly and powered his way into second.

Meanwhile, Clark, having mastered the challenging course, continued his winning ways out in front. When the white flag flew, Himaka had closed to within feet of Clark. Try as he might, though, Himaka couldn't find a way past the deceptively fast Clark, who crossed the line with the overall victory and valuable team points. Going into round seven, Team Maico continues to lead in the points over Honda and Yamaha.2010 0613 Perris Raceway Jim Gibson 14

Former factory riders Jim Gibson (14, above) and Mike Bell (39, below right) have become regulars on the Vintage racing circuit. These two former champions have shown time and again that racing classic machinery can be just as competitive as having the "latest and greatest" high-tech wonders. Yamaha rider Bell dominated the 30-minute Ironman marathon and later put on a riding clinic with two masterful rides in the Over 50 GP Expert division.2010 0613 Perris Raceway Mike Bell 39

Not to be outdone, Suzuki jockey Gibson blitzed the course without serious challenge en route to sweeping both GP 2 125 Expert motos. Riding as if on rails, it appeared that Gibson never backed off the throttle for more than a few seconds throughout both races. Now spending time teaching motocross techniques, it was obvious the teacher practices what he teaches!

Round seven of the series will be held at Barona Oaks Raceway on July 10.
