Rounds 4-5: Monster Mountain Motocross Park

Monster Mountain Vintage: Advantage Zigmont

TALLASSEE, AL2010 0529 Monster Mountain David Zigmont 6

East Point, Georgia's David Zigmont (6, above) held an advantage in speed and power at the Southeast Vintage Motocross Series race conducted on the historical track on the back side of Monster Mountain. Riding a pair of Evolution-class machines, Zigmont posted five class wins and came within a wheel's length of pulling off a six-class sweep.

Riders from six states, competing on 11 different brands of machinery, attended the event. With dozens of classes available, there was a starting line waiting for every bike and riding ability. Series sponsors include ProGold Lubricants, K. Walter, Landmark Dodge and Rankin's Motorcycle Interest.

This day's race marked two milestones in the history of Monster Mountain. The track is now beginning its second decade of competition. Also, the facility has a new owner. MX dad, Motocross Safety Council co-founder and former racer Tom Brinkman has purchased the property. Brinkman has exciting plans for the future of the track, and renovations and improvements are already in progress. At Sunday's riders' meeting, race director Larry Stahl praised outgoing track owner Andy Anderson for his support of Vintage racing and said he looked forward to working with Brinkman on future events.

On Saturday, Zigmont had his CR125 Honda running on the pipe in both Evo 200cc 1981-89 Expert motos and topped David Keith both times. Honda-mounted Roy Jenkins went 3-3 for third.

In Evo 3/4 Expert and Intermediate combined racing, Zigmont rode his monster KX500 to both moto wins, over Kevin Brulé's Yamaha in the Evo 3 Expert portion. Brian Kirby was the Evo 4 Expert winner. Chris Gaddis topped fellow Yamaha rider Joe Stricklin in Evo 4 Intermediate action.

Zigmont had gravel ricocheting off the finish-line awning as he roosted to both overall moto wins aboard his 500 in the Evo Over 40 segment of the combined Evo Over 40/Over 50 Expert and Intermediate contest. Stahl, Jeff Simons and Roy Jenkins also claimed class wins in the race.2010 0529 Monster Mountain Richard Waters 190

Nesbit, Mississippi's Richard Waters (190, above) rode his Maico to a runner-up finish, behind Phil Jones' Suzuki, in the first Evo 2 Intermediate race. In race two, Waters had his German machine hooked up and hauling. He grabbed the moto and overall wins, while Jones slipped to third in the moto, behind Steven Poss (3-2). Stricklin placed fourth overall.

On Sunday, Zigmont led Keith to the checkers in the first Evo 200cc 1981-89 Expert moto. Then things heated up in race two. Zigmont ran out front again but couldn't shake Keith. Riding with the determination of a racer who wouldn't accept defeat, IT200 enduro-mounted Keith shadowed the leader for much of the race. Going into the final left-hander, he railed the outside berm, just inches beside Zigmont, and stole the moto win and overall victory.

Perry Hayes won the Vintage Over 40 Intermediate class on a tie-breaker over fellow Yamaha rider Raymond Phillips, 2-1 to 1-2. The Montesas of Russell Cox and Ken Adams came in next. Charles Gresham and his green Penton were credited with fifth.
