MacKenzie, Vanderveur Top ACR Vintage Grass-Track Podiums

BINGHAMTON, NY

The promoters of the Broome-Tioga Sports Center, Hurd Motorsports, added an extra day of racing to follow the American Classic Racing Vintage, Vet & Youth Championships that ran on Saturday, May 22. On Sunday, the ACR guys ran an old-school motocross race on the Broome-Tioga National-caliber grass-track racecourse. The grass-track features fast straightaways, numerous off-camber sections, and several rolling hills. The race program consisted of one 30-minute moto for each class, and once the race program concluded, the entire facility was opened up for practice on its three unique racecourses.2010 0523 BTSC Scott MacKenzie 833

In the opening moto of the combined Pre-1975 and Pre-1978 contest, Gary Montminy, John Novak and Scott MacKenzie (833, above) led the pack off the start. After half a lap, the top five were Montminy, MacKenzie, Tom Bryce, Novak and Mike Robinson. Near the end of the opening lap, MacKenzie passed Montminy, taking the lead. MacKenzie had opened up a small four-second lead by the start of lap three. Three turns into the third lap, Robinson passed Bryce for third; Bryce was pushed back to fourth.

MacKenzie increased his advantage to nine seconds at the start of lap four. France closed the gap on Bryce and made the pass, taking fourth. Bryce came back and retook the position on the following lap, pushing France back to fifth. By this point, the top five had spread out, and the order was looking firmly established by the start of lap six. Meanwhile, MacKenzie continued to increase his lead with each lap and amassed a whopping 30-second advantage by the white flag and increased it to 35 seconds at the checkers. Montminy, Robinson, France and Bryce completed the top five.2010 0523 BTSC Philip Van Geldern 727 vs Q Van Geldern 857 vs Roy Vanderveur Jr 3W vs John Nardone 28
