Round five of 2010 CALVMX/AHRMA Vintage Motocross action saw the series return for the second time to Barona Oaks Raceway. The crew at Barona really hit its stride in transforming a modern track into a period-correct course suitable for the machines of Vintage racing. The track suited both the short-travel suspension of the original vintage (pre-1975) machines and their more advanced brethren from the 1975-89 era.
The Open Age division features riders of all ages on machines of all sizes. The format lends itself to excellent racing action.
The Open Age GP Expert division saw a two-moto duel between the Honda-mounted Mark Sandzimer (50, above) and the Yamaha-mounted Bryon Paquette. Moto one's start saw Paquette rocket up the starting hill with the lead and Sandzimer in hot pursuit, followed by Yamaha rider Sterlyn Rigsby. By the midway point of the moto, Paquette and Sandzimer had a 15-second lead over the rest of the field. Their contest resembled a fencing duel of thrusts and parries. Sandzimer continued pass attempts right up to the checkered flag, but it was Paquette taking the moto win, followed by Sandzimer and then Rigsby.
When the starting board went sideways and the gate dropped for moto two, Paquette, looking for the overall victory, absconded with the holeshot again. As he'd done in moto one, Sandzimer attached himself to Paquette's rear fender. If possible, the battle was even closer than before between the two Vintage racing veterans. Paquette railed the berms at virtually full throttle, while Sandzimer began to square the corners in an effort to cut inside the leader.
On the white-flag lap, Sandzimer was able to make his inside technique work, and he moved into the lead. Never one to quit, Paquette stayed in attack mode all the way to the checkers, but it was Sandzimer taking the moto win, along with the overall, ahead of Paquette and Rigsby.
The fifth round of the Manufacturers Cup Series saw team Ossa's Michael Salsman (1V, above) capturing both moto victories with two impressive rides. In moto one, Yamaha rider Chuck De Ran led the field at the start, followed by Salsman and Maico-mounted Norm Himaka. By lap three, Salsman had closed to within striking distance, and then he passed into the lead on the back half of the course. De Ran and Himaka passed and repassed each other for the remainder of the moto. Salsman took the victory, followed by De Ran and Himaka.
De Ran and Salsman led the field away from the gate at the start of moto two. Midway through the first lap, Salsman passed De Ran for the lead and then began to pull away from the pack. Current Cup points leader Himaka took over second near the end of lap one, followed by De Ran. Salsman's white-and-red Ossa continued to pull away at a torrid pace. Himaka maintained a steady pace for second, with De Ran in third. Having overcome a flat rear tire in another class, Salsman was not about to be defeated in this race. His 1-1 scores clinched the overall, followed by Himaka and De Ran.
