BRONSON, MI
Mother Nature was not a friend to the Great Lakes Regional 2010 season opener at Log Road MX: With rain and temperatures in the high 30s, only the tough and the brave came out to moto.
One gate drop put all the riders on their way to turn one at once, and leading the way was Tony Williams (66, left), aboard his green machine. Williams runs the Over 50 Intermediate class and has great speed, but out front wasn't where you'd expect a rider with - shall we say that much experience - to be. Tony was overtaken by his son Aaron Williams (64D, below right) and Jeremy Greene (20N, top), who were out for the gold in the Sportsman 250 Expert class - and several years Tony's junior. Aaron had too much speed for the field and was laying down some very fast laps in the less-than-ideal conditions, while Greene gave chase.
Aaron is no stranger to Log Road, and he was in a groove - which was bad news for the balance of the riders. Aaron took the moto win, with Greene in the runner-up spot. Gene Van Lancker and the Nardone brothers, Andy and Idra, had a good battle going throughout the moto, as the three Honda riders mixed it up, with Van Lancker taking the Ultima 500 Intermediate-class win, ahead of Idra, in the 250 Ultima Intermediate class, and Andy, in the 125 Ultima Novice class.
In moto two, it was Greene out front. The rain had subsided and the track had begun to tack up. Aaron Williams couldn't get his KX to fire up for moto two and was still wrenching when the gate fell, gifting the second-moto win to Greene - as well as the overall victory. Lancker was the second rider to cross the line, with Tony Williams not far back in third. Suzuki rider Robert Hosler (below left) from Cincinnati, Ohio, was in the top five overall throughout the race, ending the day as the fourth rider to cross the line while winning the Sportsman 125 Novice class.
The weather wasn't the best, but it was great to see the AHRMA brethren back at the track where Vintage motocrossers comes to race. The next AHRMA event at Log Road will be on Sunday, July 11, and should prove to be much warmer and, hopefully, much dryer.
