SAN BERNARDINO, CA
Just a few years ago, motocross tracks around the world echoed with the sounds of the two-stroke. Sadly for the motocross purists, this familiar sound has largely been replaced by the growl of the four-stroke.
For at least one day, two-stroke enthusiasts had their own slice of heaven at Glen Helen Raceway Park. Round four of the 2010 CALVMX/AHRMA Series occupied the REM track, and the inaugural Two-Stroke MX Championship filled the main National track with the sound of high-powered two-cycle motors.
Some 170 riders and a total of more than 200 entries filled the CALVMX/AHRMA Vintage Racing program. Among those numbers were former factory stars Scott Burnworth, Jim Gibson and Mike "Too Tall" Bell.
Bultaco-mounted Ron Baker (22, above) put on an impressive performance in the GP 2 250 Intermediate class, tallying 1-3 moto finishes. In moto one, Baker's well-prepped Spanish mount propelled him into the lead as the pack exited the starting straight. Behind him, Honda jockey Jerry Reyes and Yamaha riders Bob D'Amora and Roger Gibson dueled for position. By lap three, Baker's commanding lead ensured him of the moto win. In hot pursuit were D'Amora, Reyes and Gibson. A late-race set of passes saw Reyes taking second, followed by Gibson and D'Amora.
Moto two initially appeared to be a replay of the first race, as Baker once again gapped the pack at the start. Lap three proved his undoing, though, as a stall just past the scorers table saw him frantically kicking his machine back to life as D'Amora and Gibson sped past. Ease of starting a two-stroke enabled Baker to rapidly rejoin the fray. A valiant effort saw Baker close to a few bikelengths behind eventual winner D'Amora and Gibson. Baker's 1-3 finishes ensured him the overall victory, followed by D'Amora and Gibson.
In the Manufacturers Cup Challenge, it was a duel between Yamaha and Maico. The first moto saw Team Yamaha's Wendell Clark (431, left) muscle his way into the lead as the pack exited the first turn. Bultaco's Kevin Lewis held second, with Suzuki pilot Dave Peabody in third. Points leader Norm Himaka, on a Maico, suffered a first-turn collision and trailed back in fifth spot. Clark proceeded to hammer the course and take a resounding first-place finish in the race, while Lewis maintained a steady pace for second place. The battle for third was between Honda pilot Scott Piddington and a rapidly closing Himaka. Piddington held on for third, just ahead of Himaka.
Clark repeated his first-moto holeshot in the second race, but this time Himaka was close behind, followed by Lewis. For the first three laps, it appeared Clark would have 1-1 moto finishes. However, near the end of the third lap, Himaka powered his way into the lead as the pack headed into the back part of the course. When the racers reappeared, Himaka had extended his lead, and he held it to the finish. Clark came in second to clinch the overall with 1-2 finishes. Himaka took second overall, followed by Lewis and Piddington.
