The Santa Clara Riders Unlimited's 19th annual Mike Lightfoot Memorial motocross weekend was another huge success, with cool weather and a fantastically groomed course for determining who would gain valuable points for the championship chase about to close for 2009. Before the first round of motos was over, it became obvious that one rider was having an outstanding day. Pat Brown (83Y, left) dominated in 2007 and 2008, and on this day he was equal to if not better than his race days in the past. He entered three classes - Over 50 Expert, Sportsman Open Twin Expert, and Premier Lightweight Expert - and came away with the overall victories in each! Not only did he win, he amassed six holeshots and six outright victories.

Only in a moto involving Premier Open Twin Experts along with Sportsman Open Twin Experts did Brown have to extend himself beyond his normal fast pace. The winner of the Premier Open Twin Expert portion was Randy Skiver, on his 1957 Tri-BSA, and although Brown didn't have to beat Skiver to the checkers on his 1965 Triumph twin, he forced himself to stay ahead at the critical moment. The two gapped the field and changed the lead more than a couple of times per lap. It was the race of the day.

Pat Brown is for real. There were six other riders to overcome in Over 50 action, and many riders representing multiple classes in his other contests, but he got the holeshot in each race and beat everyone.

In other race action, 1968 Montesa Cappra-mounted Gus Fauci outdueled Jeff Robertson, on a 1970 BSA, for the overall win in the Classic 500cc Intermediate class. There were seven entries in this class, in which honoree Mike Lightfoot raced years ago. Robertson held on to win the first outing of this years' Perpetual Trophy race, and Fauci was a close second. In the second outing, Fauci reversed the finish order to take the win and break the tie. He was shocked to learn he had won the Mike Lightfoot trophy as well as the first-place award, and on the bike that had earlier been awarded the best-looking Spanish motocross bike and was also voted the "People's Choice Overall Award." Coming home third overall in the prestigious Classic 500cc Intermediate motos was Ryan Fauci, on another 1968 Montesa.
