Round 8: Barona Oaks Raceway

Back to "Old School" at Barona

LAKESIDE, CA

It wasn't just the kids who were returning for another school year, as the Vintage motocross racing community returned for some "old-school" fun at Barona Oaks Raceway. More than 100 riders and more than 200 total entries proved that even a floundering economy was not a deterrent to the Vintage racing community.Ron Baker 22 at Barona Oaks 2009 0926

A large turnout of Post Vintage (1975-89) machines, along with a smattering of pre-1974 bikes, filled the starting gates for nine motos. The Barona course had been specially configured by Brad Roysdon to cater to the older machines and their equally older riders, with period-correct jumps, turns, etc.

The GP Two 250 Intermediate class featured a two-moto match between the Spanish Bultaco-mounted Ron Baker (22, left) and Honda-mounted veteran campaigner Doug Reyes. Moto one saw Reyes timing the gate perfectly, and he quickly put more than 20 seconds between himself and the rest of the pack. Trailing in second was Baker, with Maico man Jonathan Brayley in third. Although Baker cut deep into Reyes' lead, the checkers flew for the Honda ace, followed by Baker and Brayley.

Baker turned the tables in the second moto. Halfway around the first lap, he had established a strong lead over the rest of the class. His handsome Spanish steed seemed to never miss a beat throughout the race. Pushing hard in second was the determined Reyes, but although Reyes was able to pull within several bikelengths of Baker, the Baker took the moto win and the overall victory. Reyes followed in second, with Brayley garnering third overall.Bill Lyons 77 at Barona Oaks 2009 0926

The Over 50 GP Intermediate class featured a seesaw battle between Suzuki rider Rich Yelkin and Honda rider Bill Lyons (77, right). These two veterans attacked the Barona course as if they were half their actual ages. In the first moto, Yelkin took command midway through the first lap. Lyons trailed several lengths behind, followed by Husqvarna pilot Paul Claybaugh. For the first two laps, Yelkin held a large lead over the rest of the field. Lyons began to change that on lap three, as he slowly but surely closed in on Yelkin. By the white-flag lap, Lyons had closed to within striking distance of Yelkin. Errorless riding enabled Yelkin to capture the moto victory, with Lyons and Claybaugh rounding out the top three spots.

The second moto saw Lyons carrying his momentum from the end of the first moto. He and Yelkin launched from the start virtually side by side. Through the first 2 ½ laps Yelkin maintained a several-bikelength lead over Lyons, with Yamaha-mounted Paul Grossberg in third. All of this was to change, for in the middle of lap three Lyons passed Yelkin in the back portion of the track. With a clear track ahead of him, Lyons seemed to find an extra burst of speed. Although Yelkin valiantly kept up the pursuit, it was Lyons taking the moto victory and clinching the overall for the day. Yelkin took a well-deserved second overall, followed by Grossberg in third with consistent 4-3 finishes.
