Round 17: Lodi Cycle Bowl

Lodi Riders Try Wilma One Last Time

LODI, CA

For the 19th annual 100cc Four-Stroke Minicycle National on the tight and twisty "Wilma" TT track at the Lodi Cycle Bowl, seven heats and three semis were required to set the field, which also included the last two riders to transfer out of the B main event. This event, created to test a rider's ability to wring the very most out of these little rockets, is always one of the most popular events of the year, and a total of 38 riders attempted to make the 18-rider main event.

In the main itself, a massive jump on the first start involved so many riders that the LMC had to draw extra starting lines to make the restart work.2010 0814 Lodi Dominic Colindres 66A

The first five laps were led by none other than Cole Crowley, perhaps the most improved rider of 2010. Experience counted, however, as first last year's winner, Mikey Martin (below, right), got by Cole, and then, three laps later, Dominic Colindres (66A, above, and below center) did likewise. From laps nine through 22, Martin and Colindres showed the crowd just how it's done, swapping the lead countless times as they snapped their bikes from side to side, often in perfect unison, always at the edge of traction.

It was a classic demonstration until lap 22, when Martin tried just a little too hard going into the 90-degree hairpin and tucked the front. Up in a flash, Martin did his best to close the gap back on Colindres, but Colindres knew that it was time to put his head down and ride, and that's just what he did to take the checkers and win the 2010 100cc National.2010 0814 Lodi Briar Bauman Dominic Colindres Mikey Martin

Sadly, Colindres used his luck up during the race, as his three extra raffle tickets for winning the event didn't stop young Michael Dukes from winning the 2010 CRF100F. Briar Bauman (above, left), the2010 Horizon Award winner, took third, one spot ahead of his brother Bronson, and he celebrated by grabbing the microphone and interviewing his fellow competitors, to the amusement of the crowd. In short, a great time was had by all!Lodi ad Stockton Mile

The other battle of the meet came in the Open A class, in which Briar Bauman (10, below) and Mikey Martin (91, below) had to contend with the additional threat of Stewart Barber Jr. (below, behind Bauman). Briar led the race from pole to pole, but Barber made him work for the first two laps, and then Martin kept Briar honest until the checkers flew. The greater speed and power of these 450s makes passing and dicing tougher than in the 100 National class, but these three Experts kept the fans on their feet for the full 12 laps.2010 0814 Lodi Briar Bauman 10 vs Stewart Barber 1 vs Mikey Martin 91

To the relief of most of the older riders on older bikes, the Lodi Motorcycle Club will be running the "normal" TT track for the two remaining TT events in 2010. In addition, six more short-track races remain on the 2010 calendar. The season ends with the running of the 2010 Stockton Mile on October 16 and 17 at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds. The LMC runs this two-day race with the Pros on Saturday and a full Sportsman schedule on Sunday, continuing the LMC's tradition of providing racing opportunities for young and old, Pro and Sportsman alike.
