NEW RICHMOND, WI
Pro-class contender Kevin Anderson and his little brother Cole Anderson each scored a pair of victories during the double-District points-paying tourist-trophy flat-track races held at the Amzoil Sandbox Arena.
The TT-style racetrack layout gave the riders a choice of two separate infield routes that featured altogether different entrance and exit areas. Each option lane offered a jump as well. Most of the riders felt the two separate lines were equal, but as the day progressed, many opted for the inside entrance, which offered a shorter exit route to the back chute.
Perhaps the most exciting race of the day came in the 450 Semi-Pro class, in which Kevin Anderson (11K, above) and Josh Koch (68K) squared off in the main event. Each rider experimented with the two routes throughout the race while swapping the lead on every lap. Late in the race, Kevin stalled his Honda at the infield exit to the back chute. At the time, Koch was riding the same option lane, and he inadvertently ran into the back of Anderson, and Kevin hit the ground, writhing in pain.
"I already have a torn ACL in my knee," Kevin explained afterward. "This didn't help it much."
Kevin did make the restart, and he was making ground on race leader Koch - and then he took the lead when Koch also stalled at the same portion of the track.
"I stalled my bike three times today," Koch admitted later.
With Koch no longer a threat, the EME Machining/Diesel MN/Larson's Cycle/Moose Racing-sponsored Kevin Anderson cruised to the checkers.
Kevin also topped the Open Semi-Pro class.
Kevin's younger brother Cole easily rode to victory in the Open A final. Behind the diminutive speedster, a good race for second took place among District 16's Ian Steen, District 23's Andrew Hook and District 1's David Schultz. After a seesaw battle, the threesome would finish in that order.
Cole Anderson also won the 250 A main event, just inches ahead of a hard-charging Steen, with Hook and North Dakota native Dan Jacobson in hot pursuit.
The 85cc final saw an incredible come-from-behind charge from District 16's Parker Lange. Though Lange gated poorly, he clawed his way past heat-race winner Andrew Schleicher, Jacob Jesko and Charlotte Kainz to notch an exciting victory.
