Rounds 6-7: Saddleback East Dixie Cup

Forever Young

BEDFORD, KY

The 2010 Saddleback East Dixie Cup attracted more than 80 riders from all over the country. When most people hear "Saddleback Dixie Cup," they think of rain. A "soggy" Saddleback was not the case this year; the forecast called for rain both days, but it did not put a damper on attendance. There was a very brief, light shower on Sunday morning, but it didn't affect any sections.2010 0605 Saddleback East Dixie Cup Bryan Roper

The Champ class featured many visiting riders, such as Bryan Roper (above), Karl Davis Jr. and Sam Fastle. The Exhibition class rode the same line as the Champ class. If both classes had been combined, six-time National Champion Ryan Young (below) would have beaten Karl Davis Jr. by a few cleans. Young, who could ride the Senior Over 40 class at the Nationals, proved he might be "forever young" by being competitive with current Pro rider Davis and soon-to-be-Pro rider Roper. Roper was second in the Champ class, followed by Daiki Watanabe.2010 0605 Saddleback East Dixie Cup Ryan Young

Section 10, the stadium section, was the deciding factor on Saturday. The Champ riders had to splatter up the end of an elevated log on a hillside and ride down the log. Young was the only rider to clean this section. Roper and Davis made it up the log once, but took points on top.

"Some of the sections on both days were like Pro sections from Nationals," said Young, who also complimented Davis and Roper. "[They were both] competitive, and Roper really stepped it up on Sunday and rode well."

Sunday's sections were more difficult and took more points from the Champ riders. Roper led after the first loop and didn't look back. Davis took a spill in section seven and took it easy the rest of the event. With the Nationals coming up, he didn't want to risk further injury. Roper topped the Champ class on Sunday, followed by Watanabe and Fastle.2010 0605 Saddleback East Dixie Cup Tim Cash

The Advanced class was the biggest and most competitive. Twenty riders competed, with Tim Cash (above) from Tennessee leading the way on Saturday. Cash dropped just two points until the last loop and came in with five. Quinn Wentzel placed an impressive second, finishing his day with a clean loop, which gave him the advantage over third-place finisher Charlie Gilfert.

Sunday saw different riders at the top. Ken Sprague won the day, with six points. Doug Hodgdon followed closely, and Kunio Watanabe was third. Cash followed with a fourth-place finish on Sunday, but that was enough to give him the overall trophy for the weekend.

Seth Herrel had outstanding rides on both days to claim the Youth A top spot, followed by Noah Annichenni and his brother Christian. The Annichenni brothers battled it out on Sunday and ended up swapping positions. Jared Herrel followed his brother's lead and won the Youth B class. William Spring was second on the podium, with Kayleigh Turovsky in third.

Trials Inc.'s next round will be held in Dayton, Ohio, on August 14 and 15.
