Rounds 12-13: Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club

Stoney Turns 25

COLUMBUS, IN

A 2009 attendance record was set at the Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club's 25th-anniversary Trials, with more than 80 riders competing. The Trials Inc. crew had been looking forward to this celebration all year. The Stoney Lonesome members did not let them down. Stoney is rich with trials history, dating back to the late 1970s, when the club held its first National event. The likes of Bernie Schriber, the only U.S. World Champion, Marland Whaley, Lane Leavitt, Morgan Kavanaugh, Jack Stites, Dwaine Walters and Curt Comer have all ridden a Stoney event. From the early '70s until 1984, they were single-day events, but starting in 1984 brothers Jim and Dave Watson started the two-day format and never looked back.

With an idea from the TTC National this year, Stoney held a Champ-class Shootout after the event on Saturday, in the stadium section right behind the pavilion. The Shootout consisted of an 11th section with a mix of manmade obstacles and very large logs. The Champ riders rode the section four times in front of a huge and enthusiastic crowd.

"Wow - it could not have been scripted any better," Jim Zuroske said.Chase Harker at Stoney Lonesome MC 2009 0919

Going into the Shootout, Chase Harker (above) was two points behind leader Yuki Watanabe (below right) and ahead of Aaron Brandenburg by two points. When the smoke settled from the Shootout, Harker came out on top, winning by six points over Watanabe. Brandenburg tied Watanabe, giving up second by only a few cleans. Exhibition rider Ryan Young also rode section 11, and provided some flash.Yuki Watanabe at Stoney Lonesome MC 2009 0919

With the success of EnduroCross, the Stoney crew encouraged their Enduro riders to participate in the trials. They created a unique enduro-trials line, and it resulted in too much fun for a dozen riders on regular dirt bikes. John Robbins mastered the slower pace and confined sections with first place each day. Robbins showed off his balance taking only 14 points the first day.

The sections were set up well and provided challenges for all classes. Zuroske said his favorite was section four on Saturday.

"The section worked out as planned," he said. "It took fives from every Champ rider without being 'stupid-hard.' By the end of the day, they all figured out how to get through it."

Brandenburg was the only Champ rider to clean the section.

For some extra fun on Sunday, the Stoney crew added some rain to make the event more memorable. For those who finished the trial on Sunday, it was a great accomplishment. Despite the sloppy weather on Sunday, fun was had by all. The Stoney 25th annual trial was a huge success and has a good shot at being voted TI trial of the year.
