RENO, NV
The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, in conjunction with Live Fast Entertainment and SupermotoUSA, put on the biggest Supermoto event in years, and it was living legend Micky Dymond (43, below) taking home the biggest share of the combined $6,000 Pro purse.
Two events - a Dash For Cash on Friday evening, and then a two-moto Pro Unlimited main event on Saturday - featured the Pro Unlimited racers, including England's Matt Winstanley (1, above) who made the trip from Manchester to get a piece of the casino's money.
The Dash For Cash would start with 20 riders and eliminate the four slowest in one-lap "dashes," and then the final eight would run three laps for the $1,000 winner-take-all paycheck.
After the eliminations, the flag flew for the final eight, and it was Precepts Motorsports/CHM Supermoto's young hotshoe Dustin Hoffman (27, below) who grabbed the lead and put a gap on second-placed Tyler O'Hara, who was followed by Dymond and Winstanley.
It was looking like the first surprise of the weekend would be a Hoffman victory, but heading to the white flag, the youngster tucked his front end in the dirt left-hander, and Dymond snatched the opportunity like the seasoned Pro he is to grab the $1,000. Winstanley followed him in, and Hoffman remounted for third.
Saturday featured the two-moto format for the Unlimited Pros, and timed qualifying had the borrowed, stock-motored Husqvarna of Winstanley on the pole, and then Hoffman, Dymond and Josh Chisum on the front row.
At the drop of the flag, Dymond grabbed the lead on his CHM-backed CRF450R and put a slight gap between himself and Winstanley. By the halfway point, the Brit caught the Yank and it was nose to tail, and it would stay that way to the checkers in an exciting first half of what we be more to come in the deciding moto. Third went to Hoffman, followed by O'Hara and Reno's own Steve Marty.
Moto two had the same front row, with O'Hara on the outside and Chisum on the third after a crash in the first moto. Again, it was Dymond with the holeshot and Winstanley - closer this time - in second.
It was Dymond and Winstanley all the way to the checkers, with Micky making the most of his MX skills on the final turn to bounce off the berm and rocket to his third win of the weekend and claim the top dollars, with the UK's Winstanley wheeling right next to him.
The estimated crowd of 15,000 to 20,000 was treated to a Supermoto race they'll be talking about for years to come!
