GREENE, NY
Round two of the New York State Championships was held at Action Park East in Greene, New York. It had rained several times earlier in the day, but luckily the track surface stood up well, and racing began at 7 p.m. Veteran star Tuff McBride (above) carried a two-point lead into the evening and was looking to catch his first State title since his win in 1983 at Action Park, 27 years earlier!
Casey Donholt was leading the first event but fell, which opened the door for Lee Bailey to take three points, with Dee Holden second. Next, current State champ Adam Mittl won handily in his first ride over Jerry Harman, Andy Crawford and Cole Farwell, in that order. McBride was on his game from the get-go and beat Mikey Buman and Dave Clark in the next heat.
McBride kept the points rolling in come round two and won over Crawford and Holden. Harman got some revenge on Mittl and handed him a loss in the next outing, with Bailey third and Clark fourth. Then Donholt got on the score chart with three points, over Buman and Farwell.
In round three, it was again McBride on top when he met a tough challenge from Mittl; the two seesawed back and forth for most of the race, but McBride came out ahead, with Mittl in second, Bailey in third and Holden fourth. Next time out, it was Donholt who won for the second time; Harman was a close second, with Crawford and Clark in third and fourth, respectively. Next, Buman also recorded a win, with Farwell second.
To close out the heat racing, McBride stayed unbeaten with a win against Harman, with Holden in third. Next, in a stacked heat, Donholt won, with Buman second and Mittl third. Clark won the final outing, with Bailey crashing out, Farwell breaking down and the last rider scratching.
Bunk Harris won the Support Speedway final in his first race of the year. Coming in second was teenager Zach Peters from Lockport, New York. Third was Brian Bailey, fourth was Dee Holden and fifth was Delber Roser.
When McBride lined up for the Pro Speedway main event, he was matched against kids that were not even born when he won his first State Championship back in 1983. That didn't seem to matter, though, as he outgated the competition and showed the form that has made him one of the top East Coast Speedway racers for more than 30 years as his JBR/Justice Brothers/Polito Motors/Oury/NGK-backed Jawa carried him to the title of 2010 New York Stat Champion, 27 years later! Donholt was second, Mittl was third and Harman finished fourth.
The next event at Champion Speedway in Owego, New York, will be held on July 10.
